The 17th Door (Event #10)

The 17th Door was totally worth the hour+ drive to get there. It was a great combination of Tension and Universal Horror Nights. And being as inexpensive as it was, there was such high production value and great actors. There were certain special effects rooms that really wowed me. I *really* don’t want to give too much away on this one…

After signing a pretty funny waiver in the lobby adorned with photo ops, we got into our regular-ticket line, in which we only had to wait about 30 minutes. During the wait, there were scare-actors and effects to keep up our adrenaline. I also have to compliment their choice of music over the loudspeakers. We entered in small groups, I think ours had 5 people. The basic layout of the place is that there are 17 doors (hehe) - one was a small escape room that had us running around frantically - linked by little hallways. Your group waits in the hallway until the light above the door turns green, and then you enter the room. It’s good to note, though, that doesn’t mean the hallways were “safe”.

As general as I can be, there were some gross things, but not as much as I was expecting based on the waiver we signed. The gore was not too crazy, but the attraction does deal with some very uncomfortable topics that are definitely not for everyone. We did not have to eat or drink anything. We did get touched and wet, and interacted with some of the scare-actors. There were confined spaces and a few places with electricity. What I absolutely LOVED about The 17th Door is that there actually was a story (which is what lacked for me in Creep). Not so straightforward as Tension, but the more my friend and I thought about it afterward, the more it all came together and made sense. Even during the event, we could tell there were themes and ideas moving us along from room to room. A twisted mixture of memories, nightmares and fears. It was like a Sixth Sense a-ha moment. We talked about it probably the whole way home. If you can handle heavy topics and jump-scares, I can’t recommend this one enough.

Who's doing the photobombing, really?
